New Delhi, February 20: The T20 World Cup 2026 has seen several thrilling matches in its opening round. Teams like Zimbabwe, Italy, and the USA made their mark in the group stage, while some major teams faced early setbacks. The Australian team, which won the T20 World Cup in 2021, saw its journey end in the group stage this time. England and Pakistan also had to work hard to secure their places in the Super 8.

Australia was considered a strong contender for the title again, but under the captaincy of Mitchell Marsh, their performance was disappointing. The team suffered a one-sided defeat against Zimbabwe and was easily beaten by Sri Lanka by 8 wickets. The absence of key players like Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins was clearly felt.

Australia’s bowling attack appeared weak, allowing opposing batsmen to capitalize. The team failed to defend a target of 182 runs against Sri Lanka. Notable T20 players like Tim David, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis had disappointing performances with the bat.

Pakistan barely escaped defeat in their opening match against the Netherlands. The team’s weak batting order was exposed in their game against India, with only Sahibzada Farhan showing some promise. Babar Azam has also struggled significantly in this T20 World Cup.

Ireland had high hopes for the tournament, but under Paul Stirling’s captaincy, their performance has been disappointing, with only one win in four matches. Except for a match against Oman, the team’s batting lineup has failed to deliver.

Although England has managed to reach the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2026, their performance has not been satisfactory. They narrowly avoided an upset against Nepal and struggled against the West Indies, with batsmen like Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, and Phil Salt failing to perform as expected. Jofra Archer also could not leave a mark in the first round.
