Actor Sanjana Sanghi recently made an appearance at a prominent film festival where she spoke not only about her creative journey but also about her evolving role as a changemaker. Known for her breakout role in Dil Bechara, Sanjana’s career has grown beyond the boundaries of cinema — into activism, youth advocacy, and education reform.
Sanjana Sanghi dreams of a nation where ‘no child is uneducated’; actress urges action on education gaps
Addressing an audience of young creatives and changemakers, Sanjana reflected on her experiences both on-screen and off it. While she acknowledged the value of storytelling in shaping culture, she steered the conversation toward a larger issue — education inequality in India.
As a Youth Advocacy Champion with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Sanjana shared powerful insights from her work with global youth networks and her belief in the transformative power of education. “I remember watching Emma Watson speak at the UN and thinking — this is where real impact begins,” she recalled. “Teaching children gave me a sense of connection. Eventually, I started mentoring volunteers and building that initiative forward. I have a dream to have an organisation where no one is uneducated in our country. I feel lack of education penetration is the larger social issue in our country.”
The actor, who is also a gold medallist from Delhi University, stressed that academic access must be seen as foundational to solving broader societal issues. “The lack of education is the root of larger issues we face. Solve that, and you address gender and pay disparity, menstrual health awareness, women’s rights, and so much more,” she said. Citing alarming statistics, she added, “Unfortunately, in lockdown, the studies show that 10 million girls were forced to drop out of school and pushed into domesticity, and the number for boys was less than a million.”
Reflecting on her own career highs and lows, Sanjana shared a candid moment about the underperformance of her 2022 action film Rashtra Kavach: Om. “Om not performing at the box office was the first time I realised what ‘process is the prize’ meant. Even though it didn’t, I remember calling all my friends over on the Friday of release to celebrate, because it was a journey that I enjoyed so much. Doing a film with Adi in itself was a blast!”
Her words underscored a deep sense of self-awareness and purpose, reminding the audience that success isn’t always measured in numbers. By bringing her lived experiences and advocacy work to the forefront, Sanjana Sanghi left attendees thinking not just about cinema, but about their role in shaping the world beyond it.
