Wayanad Landslide Death Toll Rises to Five

Udaipur, July 9: The death toll from the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, has risen to five after two more bodies were recovered from the debris. The search continues for three missing individuals.

Reports indicate that one body was found in search area Zone-1 on Thursday morning, while the other was discovered in a river. Agricultural Minister T. Siddique inspected the site during the rescue operations and confirmed that both bodies have been sent to the hospital for identification.

Opposition Leader in the Kerala Assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan, also visited the site on Thursday morning, accompanied by CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan, where they interacted with rescue workers and local residents.

The landslide occurred on Tuesday when a large portion of an excavated soil hill collapsed, burying workers beneath the debris. Following the incident, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) initiated rescue operations in collaboration with local authorities. However, intermittent rain and unstable ground conditions have hampered the rescue efforts. Several individuals have been rescued and hospitalized, while three fatalities were reported initially.

Approximately five individuals were reported missing, and teams are actively searching for them, with two bodies already recovered.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan visited the disaster site on Wednesday evening to assess the situation. He instructed officials to continue the rescue operations without interruption and to provide all possible assistance to affected families. The government has also ordered close monitoring of vulnerable areas in the district due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
