Mumbai, May 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Punjab. The department has advised residents to exercise extreme caution during this period.
The IMD has indicated that significant weather changes are expected in various parts of the country on May 16. Winds are likely to reach speeds of 80 to 85 kilometers per hour in several areas. Northern Indian states may experience severe thunderstorms again, with warnings of hailstorms issued for multiple regions.
In Punjab, alerts for thunderstorms and rain have been issued for six districts. According to the weather center in Chandigarh, there is a possibility of intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, and Muktsar, with wind speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.
Additionally, the IMD has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for heatwave conditions in several parts of Punjab from May 16 to May 20.
Residents of Delhi enjoyed a pleasant morning on Friday, with a minimum temperature recorded at around 25 degrees Celsius. This followed a day of strong dust storms and gusty winds in the national capital and parts of northern India. However, the IMD predicts a rapid increase in temperatures in Delhi-NCR over the next few days, with maximum temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
The department had previously forecast thunderstorms and light rain during the night. Despite a brief respite from the heat, the latest predictions suggest a return to hot and dry weather in the region.
It is estimated that on May 16, Delhi will experience clear skies with maximum temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius. On May 17, temperatures may rise further to 42 degrees Celsius, with partial cloud cover and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
