On the eve of Republic Day, the government announced the recipients of the Padma Awards for 2026. A total of 131 individuals have been honoured across various categories including 113 Padma Shri, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 5 Padma Vibhushan awards.
This year’s list includes well-known personalities as well as lesser-known individuals working at the grassroots level in remote and underdeveloped areas. Among the eminent awardees, veteran actor Dharmendra Singh Deol has been posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award, while cricketer Rohit Sharma has been conferred the Padma Shri.
The list also features 19 women and six foreign nationals or overseas Indians. Additionally, sixteen awards have been given posthumously in recognition of outstanding contributions.
Notable recipients of the Padma Shri include hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia, industrialist Ashok Khare, and litterateur Ashok Kumar Haldar. Former JNU Vice-Chancellor M. Jagdish Kumar and former Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati are also among those honoured with the Padma Shri.
The Padma Vibhushan awardees include Dharmendra Singh Deol, K.T. Thomas from Kerala, N. Rajam, P. Narayanan, and V.S. Achyuthanandan (posthumous) for their contributions in literature, education, and other fields.
The Padma Bhushan awardees comprise thirteen distinguished individuals, such as singer Alka Yagnik, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari, actor Mammootty, and banker Uday Kotak. Others honoured with this award include Dr. Nori Dattatreyaudu and Piyush Pandey (posthumous).
A diverse group of 113 individuals have been awarded the Padma Shri this year for their work in fields ranging from literature, education, medicine, arts, social service, agriculture, and environmental conservation. Some names include Anke Gouda (literature and education, Karnataka), Armida Fernandes (medicine, Maharashtra), Ghafuruddin Mewati Jogi (arts, Rajasthan), Kailash Chandra Pant (literature and education, Madhya Pradesh), and Padma Gurmet (medicine, Ladakh).
The awards recognise the outstanding achievements and dedication of individuals contributing significantly to society and the nation, reflecting a wide spectrum of Indian talent and service.
