Winter Foot Care Essential for Health, Ayurveda Explains Why

New Delhi: Cold air and chilly floors during winter affect the body deeply, with the feet being the most impacted. If feet are not kept warm and clean, problems like difficulty in sleeping, stiffness, cramps, and pain can arise.

According to Ayurveda, there are nearly 72,000 nerve endings in the feet connected to other body parts and the brain. Therefore, cold feet do not only cause local discomfort but also affect the entire body and mental well-being.

Winter’s cold, dryness, and heaviness increase the Vata dosha. When Vata is imbalanced, it can cause nerve stiffness, body fatigue, lack of sleep, and sometimes digestive issues. Hence, Ayurveda emphasizes keeping the feet warm and relaxed.

A simple home remedy is to soak the feet in lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes before sleeping. Adding rock salt or sesame/mustard oil to the water can help warm the nerves, improve blood circulation, and calm both body and mind.

Applying light oil or ghee after washing feet is also beneficial. It prevents cracked heels and makes the skin soft and smooth. For severe fatigue or stress, adding 1-2 drops of eucalyptus or lavender oil to the water helps. The fragrance acts on the brain’s limbic system, reducing mental stress. Regular practice promotes faster sleep, reduces daily tiredness, and protects against cold-related foot issues in winter.

Foot care is not only about keeping the body warm but also vital for sound sleep, mental peace, and overall HEALTH. Small habits like warm water soaks, gentle oil application, and wearing cotton socks can make nights comfortable and strengthen both body and mind during the winter season.
