Dhaka, 30 December. Professor Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, expressed deep sorrow on Tuesday over the death of Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He said the nation has lost a strong protector of democracy and an experienced politician with her passing.
In his condolence message, Mohammad Yunus said, “I am deeply saddened and distressed by Khaleda Zia’s death. The country has lost a great guardian. Khaleda Zia was not just a political party leader but an important chapter in Bangladesh’s history.”
Professor Yunus noted that considering Begum Khaleda Zia’s long struggle, contributions, and the deep affection of the people towards her, the government had recently conferred upon her the status of a very important state figure. The country will always remember her role in establishing democracy, multi-party political culture, and the rights of the people. Her steadfast leadership repeatedly helped the nation overcome undemocratic conditions and inspired people to seek freedom. The nation will honor her contributions with respect.
He added that despite political differences, Khaleda Zia’s entire political journey was dedicated to the welfare of the country and its people. Her people-centric leadership and strong resolve always guided the nation. Her death is a loss of an experienced and seasoned politician for Bangladesh.
Professor Yunus recalled that Begum Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister and, as BNP chairperson, led the restoration of democracy against dictatorship. After the death of her husband, former President, Army Chief, and freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman, she entered politics in the 1980s. Her strong leadership played a decisive role in ending the nine-year dictatorship of then-President H.M. Ershad. Many of her decisions and initiatives propelled the country forward.
Yunus especially highlighted that the introduction of free education and scholarships for girls was a historic initiative by Khaleda Zia, considered a milestone in the field of women’s education in Bangladesh.
The chief advisor said Khaleda Zia was highly successful in her political career and was never defeated in any election. Between 1991 and 2001, she was elected from five different parliamentary constituencies. In the 2008 elections, she contested from three seats and won all three.
He stated that after becoming Prime Minister in 1991, Khaleda Zia laid a strong foundation for the country’s economy through economic liberalization.
Professor Yunus also said that during Sheikh Hasina’s alleged fascist rule, Khaleda Zia emerged as a unique symbol of struggle and resistance. Her firm stance inspired the country during the prolonged movement.
The chief advisor added that due to her political success, Khaleda Zia faced severe political retaliation, receiving a 17-year sentence in false and fabricated cases and spending a long time in jail.
He appealed to the citizens to maintain peace and restraint during this irreparable national loss and requested everyone to pray for the peace of Khaleda Zia’s soul in their own places.
