Life-Saving Surgery Performed on Newborn at PIMS Hospital, Udaipur | Udaipur Kiran

Udaipur (Udaipur Kiran): A team of doctors at Pacific Medical College and Hospital (PIMS), Udaipur, successfully performed a complex life-saving surgery on a newborn, giving the infant a new lease of life.

Pediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra said the baby was referred to PIMS from Jannat Medical Centre, Udaipur, with severe breathing difficulty and inability to swallow milk or saliva. Upon examination, doctors discovered that the baby’s food pipe (esophagus) was undeveloped and the infant was suffering from Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula (TEF) — a serious congenital surgical condition. The newborn also had pneumonia and infection, making the situation extremely critical.

The baby was initially placed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU). As soon as the condition stabilized, the surgical team proceeded with the operation.

Dr. Mishra explained that this rare condition occurs in approximately one out of every 3,000 to 4,000 newborns. In this case, the two ends of the esophagus were far apart, posing additional challenges during the three-and-a-half-hour-long surgery. Despite the complications, the surgical team successfully connected the two ends.

He added that postoperative complications are common in such cases, especially when the newborn is already battling pneumonia and infections. The doctors and nursing staff worked tirelessly to ensure the baby’s recovery. It also took time for the infant to relearn how to feed. After nearly a month of intensive care and treatment, the baby made a full recovery and was discharged from the hospital.

The medical team included Dr. Kamlesh, Dr. Peenu, Dr. Tyagi, Dr. Sakshi, Dr. Priya, Dr. Sumit, Dr. Atharv, Dr. Muskan, Dr. Ankit, Dr. Vivek Parashar, and Dr. Rahul Khatri, along with staff members Arun, Reshma, Ashok, Shiv, Deepak, Rahul, and Chhagan, who all played vital roles in the successful treatment.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal said that the hospital is equipped with all advanced medical facilities. The child’s treatment was provided free of cost under the Janani Suraksha Yojana.
