Washington, October 22 (Udaipur Kiran): The planned second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was expected to take place in Budapest, has been put on hold. A senior administration official confirmed on Tuesday that no meeting between the two leaders is scheduled in the near future.

The development comes just days after President Trump had suggested that the two might meet within the next two weeks. However, following a phone conversation last Thursday, the U.S. president appeared to reconsider.

According to a report by CNN, Trump said on Tuesday that he did not want the meeting to become a “waste of time.” While he did not completely rule out a future engagement with Putin, he indicated that such a meeting was no longer a top priority.

“We’ll let you know in the next couple of days what we’re doing,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Last week, Trump had said that the United States and Russia had agreed to hold a high-level advisory meeting next week, raising expectations that a Trump-Putin summit could soon follow. U.S. officials had anticipated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would meet his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to lay the groundwork for the leaders’ talks.

However, officials have now confirmed that diplomatic contact between the two sides has paused. A source familiar with the matter said that Rubio and Lavrov held differing expectations regarding the possible resolution of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The two ministers spoke over the phone on Monday, and a senior U.S. official described the conversation as “constructive”, adding that an in-person meeting is not necessary at this stage.

For now, the Trump administration has no immediate plans for a Trump-Putin summit, though both sides have left the door open for future diplomatic engagement.
