Ishaan Khatter shares his take on the 8-hour workday debate: “It’s a very privileged position to say I’m okay to work these many hours” 8 : Bollywood News

The conversation around work-life balance in the entertainment industry has taken centre stage ever since Deepika Padukone highlighted the importance of an 8-hour work shift. Her views have prompted several industry voices to share their perspectives, the latest being actor Ishaan Khatter, who opened up about the topic during an interview with NDTV.

Addressing the ongoing debate, Ishaan offered a nuanced take on the idea of limiting work hours in the film industry — one that recognizes both the creative passion that drives cinema and the need for empathy toward the people behind the scenes. He said, “It’s a very privileged position to be able to say that I’m okay to work these many hours.” Elaborating further, Ishaan emphasized the importance of considering everyone involved in the filmmaking process. “To be considerate is to understand that it’s a very privileged position to be in as an actor – to be able to say that I’m okay to work these many hours. But there are people in the crew who come in an hour before you, and they have to pack up and leave later. It takes them longer to go back home, so you need to be considerate of the working environment, and decisions should be taken accordingly, I think. That’s one thing.”

However, Ishaan also acknowledged that the entertainment world thrives on passion and creative energy, which often extends beyond a structured schedule. “But what we do is a profession of passion, and often you see people consensually wanting to finish the day’s work and not go home without completely completing their desire and imagination, and letting it come to life the way they want. So it happens. But yeah, I think the thing that’s important is to be considerate of everybody’s time and effort,” he added.

For the unversed, the debate sparked when Deepika Padukone allegedly laid her terms and conditions of fixed work hours while signing the Sandeep Reddy Vanga film Spirit opposite Prabhas. Since then, while the actress has maintained her stand of working specific amount of hours, a move prompted by motherhood, many celebrities have joined the debate giving multiple perspectives on the subject.

Meanwhile, Ishaan’s perspective sums up the delicate balance between discipline and artistic freedom. While actors and filmmakers are driven by creativity and ambition, his remarks serve as a reminder that the industry runs on the collective effort of many — from actors to crew members — all of whom deserve equal respect for their time and dedication.

With voices like his joining the conversation, the debate around structured work hours in Bollywood continues to evolve — one thoughtful comment at a time.
