Miles Caton, the breakout star of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, says he hopes to join the Marvel Universe, and may already have a character in mind.
Caton, 20, makes his feature film debut in Sinners as Sammie, a blues-loving teenager whose music sparks supernatural events. The role combined acting with musical performance and has since opened the door to new opportunities.
Asked about the kinds of roles he wants to pursue next, Caton told Variety, “I’m a big Marvel fan. Marvel, that’s top of the top, so shooting for the stars.” He then added, “I mean, my name is Miles…” — a clear nod to Marvel’s Miles Morales, the teenage version of Spider-Man introduced in comics in 2011 and popularised in the Spider-Verse animated films.
While Caton didn’t confirm any discussions with Marvel, the comment has sparked speculation about whether he could be considered for the role in a future live-action project.
Caton’s performance in Sinners has already drawn significant attention. Director Ryan Coogler and casting director Francine Maisler selected him after an international search. “This kid looked like he was in his basement, like in between homework assignments,” Coogler told Variety. “But he had this voice — a once in a lifetime voice — and he also felt like the character.”
Caton, the son of gospel singer Timiney Figueroa, has been performing since childhood. Before finishing high school, he had already toured with artists like H.E.R. and worked with gospel figures including Fred Hammond and Erica Campbell. For Sinners, he spent months learning blues guitar and worked with dialect and acting coaches to prepare.
In addition to his role, Caton co-wrote and performed an original song for the film with composer Ludwig Göransson and artist Alice Smith.
