Vaadivaasal, the long-awaited film starring Suriya and directed by Vetri Maaran, is set to go on floors soon. Kalaipuli S Thanu, the producer of the movie, told The Hindu that the film will get rolling from June, 2025.

“We are also planning to hold an inauguration event, at which we would announce the date the film would go on floors. We will also reveal the release date of the movie during the event,” said Thanu, who is currently gearing up for the re-release of his 2005 movie Sachien, headlined by Vijay and Genelia. The romantic comedy will hit the theatres again on April 18, 2025 (Friday).

Vaadivaasal is based on the novel by late writer CS Chellappa. The novel is about jallikattu, an ancient Tamil sport, and the taming of the bull ‘Kaari’ by a character named Picchi, whose father Ambulithevan was gored to death by the bull. Thanu will produce the movie under the banner V Creations. The movie was announced in 2021.

Vetri Maaran’s last release was Viduthalai 2, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Manju Warrier. Released on December 20, 2024, the movie came under criticism for shoddy production quality and poor lip syncing. The veteran producer refuted the claims and defended the filmmaker.

Viduthalai 2 turned out to be a huge hit. Its OTT rights were sold for Rs 37 crores. It was a commercial hit in theatres as well. This is the first time I am hearing such criticism,” he said. “I really liked it when I watched it. Maybe a few would have observed too minutely and are criticising based on that.”

Thanu expressed his delight to collaborate with Vetri Maaran again after Asuran (2019). “Vetri Maaran is a man of his word. Even when many stars offered him dates, he told them he would sign those projects only after finishing Vaadivaasal.”

The producer also spoke about Train, his upcoming project with Mysskin. The film, touted to be a thriller, stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead. “Mysskin is a prolific filmmaker, one of our praiseworthy filmmakers. Train would have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a film that revolves around a mysterious incident that happens on a train,” said Thanu.
