Actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease that affects muscle control.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the 52-year-old told PEOPLE. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Despite the diagnosis, Dane plans to continue working and is scheduled to return to the set of HBO’s Euphoria on April 14, as production for the third season begins. He plays Cal Jacobs on the hit series.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” he said. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart. The couple share two daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over time, it leads to muscle weakness, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and eventually, loss of mobility and respiratory function. The condition has no known cure.
Most people diagnosed with ALS are between the ages of 40 and 70. Dane’s announcement adds to growing awareness of the disease, which the National ALS Registry estimates affects over 20,000 Americans, with numbers expected to rise in the coming years.
