Sharmila Tagore disclosed that she privately fought cancer in 2023, a revelation that left fans stunned since the veteran actress had kept her struggle out of the public eye. Recently, her daughter Soha Ali Khan spoke about that difficult time and shared personal insights into the experience.

In an open chat with Nayandeep Rakshit on his YouTube channel, Soha Ali Khan shared, “I have had loss in my family. We have been through stressful situations, as everybody does.” She added, “With my mother, she was one of the very few people to be diagnosed with lung cancer at stage zero, and no chemotherapy, nothing. It was cut out of her and she is, touchwood, fine.”
Sharmila Tagore’s health issues became public knowledge during her 2023 appearance on Koffee with Karan, where she was joined by her son, Saif Ali Khan.
Host Karan Johar shared that Sharmila Tagore was his first choice for the role eventually played by Shabana Azmi in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. He said, “I had offered Sharmilaji the part that Shabanaji played. She was my initial pick. But due to health issues at the time, she couldn’t accept it. It’s something I truly regret.”
Sharmila Tagore responded, “It was at the height of COVID. They hadn’t really grappled with it at that time, we were not vaccinated. After my cancer… they didn’t want me to take that risk.”
Sharmila Tagore recently appeared in the Bengali film Puratwan alongside Rituparna Sengupta, which releases today. Her previous film, Gulmohar (2023), co-starring Manoj Bajpayee, was critically acclaimed and won three National Awards, including Best Feature Film in Hindi and Best Screenplay (Dialogues).
