When it comes to acting, Mahesh Manjrekar is often known for his negative roles. Since last year, his character in the Salman Khan-Ayesha Takia starrer Wanted (2009) has become legendary, especially the ‘Cocaine’ dialogue. At the trailer launch, the reputed actor-filmmaker was asked about this aspect and playing an all-white role in Devmanus.

Mahesh Manjrekar began by saying, “The problem is that I got similar kinds of roles after Kaante (2002). There was also a Salman Khan film which I did….” When he was reminded of its name, Mahesh Manjrekar continued, “Yes, Wanted. Even Musafir (2004), for that matter. I can do positive roles very nicely. I played a positive character in Juna Furniture (2024).”

At this point, Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar remarked, “He’s a ‘dev manus’ (God person) in real life. You just don’t know about it!”

Mahesh Manjrekar continued, “Once your image is set, breaking it is very difficult. There were exceptions though. I did a role in Dabangg (2010), which was an emotional one. Otherwise, nobody offered me a positive role, more so after Kaante. I didn’t mind as I wasn’t that keen on acting at that point. At this stage of your career, when getting even a character role is a feat, landing the lead role is something I am thankful to Luv Films and the whole team. At this point in life, we often think, ‘If the role is nice, let’s do it’. And then when you are offered a central role, then the happiness is unparalleled.”

He ended by joking, “I was always a ‘dev manus’. Everybody just offered me villainous roles (smiles)!”

Devmanus releases in cinemas on April 25.
