Veteran actor Anupam Kher stood his ground and defended his presence in a pivotal scene of Silver Linings Playbook, even when Robert De Niro—his acting idol—felt otherwise. In a candid chat, Sikandar Kher shared valuable life lessons learned from his stepfather, highlighting his resilience and courage. Recalling the incident from the set of David O. Russell’s Oscar-winning film Silver Linings Playbook, Sikandar revealed: “Robert De Niro, my father’s favourite actor, felt that his character wouldn’t let my dad’s character into the house. So he said that Anupam shouldn’t be in the scene.”
While most actors might have quietly stepped back—especially in the presence of Hollywood giants like Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Chris Tucker, and De Niro himself—Anupam Kher chose to speak up. “He walked up to the director in front of the entire cast and crew and gave him a piece of his mind—respectfully but firmly. He explained why he should be in the scene.”
Director David O. Russell, faced with a sudden moment of tension, turned to De Niro and asked, “Bob?” To which De Niro gave a nod of approval. “He could’ve lost that part. He was a nobody there, just an Indian actor. But he stood his ground and held on to his self-respect,” Sikandar said with pride.
From Saaransh to Silver Linings: A Career Built on Grit
Sikandar also shared another defining moment from Anupam’s early career—when he was replaced in Saaransh without being informed. Broke and disheartened, Anupam decided to confront Mahesh Bhatt before leaving Mumbai. That confrontation won him the role back and launched his celebrated career. “A man already drenched isn’t afraid of the rain—that’s something I learned from him,” Sikandar said.
