US Vice President JD Vance strongly condemned army combat veteran and political commentator Fred Wellman after being labelled the “worst VP in modern history.” Wellman, host of On Democracy with FPWellman, criticised Vance in a social media post, sharing a video of him condemning Denmark‘s handling of Greenland.
“Just disgusting behavior by the worst VP in modern history,” Wellman wrote in his post, referencing Vance’s remarks about Denmark’s role in protecting Greenland.
Vance wasted no time in responding, accusing his critics of wanting to “turn Europe into a permanent protectorate”. “These people want to turn Europe into a permanent protectorate. The problem: if it was ever a good idea, it is simply not sustainable with $2 trillion in annual deficits,” Vance said.
The vice president made these comments during a visit to the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland. At a press conference, he took aim at Denmark’s approach to Greenland, criticising its level of investment in the region.
“Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Vance said during his visit. “You have under-invested in the people of Greenland and you have under-invested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.”
US President Donald Trump has long argued that Greenland is vital to US national and global security, even suggesting that force should not be ruled out as a means of securing the Arctic island. “We are not talking about peace for the United States. We are talking about world peace. We are talking about international security,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday.
When questioned about the potential use of force, Vance reassured that military action was not under consideration. “We think this makes sense and because we think the people of Greenland are rational and good, we think we’re going to be able to cut a deal, Donald Trump-style, to ensure the security of this territory but also the United States of America,” he said.
