The legendary Amitabh Bachchan has had a long career of over 50 years. Apart from playing a wide variety of roles all through the five decades, he also has the feat of appearing in and singing quite a few popular Holi songs. On the occasion of Holi, he got talking to us about his Holi songs.
Amitabh Bachchan on the popularity of ‘Rang Barse’: “We had no idea that the song would go so far”
Amitji, you have sung quite a number of popular Holi songs
Not that many. But yes, ‘Range barse’ from Silsila became quite popular.
Not “quite” popular. It’s the number 1 Holi song on all playlists
If you say so. It did seem to have a caught the public’s fancy. When we were recording the song, we had no idea it would go so far. Singing for me was never a serious pursuit. I’ve always said I am no singer. I sing when I am asked to. That doesn’t mean I’m a singer.
So what does it mean?
It means some producers and composers feel I can pull it off.
Your other perennial Holi favourite is, ‘Hori khele Raghuveera Awadh Mein’ from Baghban. How did that happen?
My dear much-missed friend Aadesh Shrivastava and I used to have these jamming sessions in his music studio. We must have recorded hundreds of hours of music. I’d go over to his studio whenever I felt like and we would do our own thing. This is how ‘Hori Khele Raghuveera’ happened. Again, this was a traditional song. I believe tradition is the most reliable medium of longevity. Some of the most durable film songs are based on folk songs.
Do you still get requests to sing ‘Rang Barse’ at Holi parties?
Where are the Holi parties? None that I attend, at least.
