New Delhi, June 7: Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal recently concluded a three-day visit to India, where he met with the country’s top leadership. During his visit, he emphasized the strong relationship between India and Nepal, stating that there are ample opportunities for enhanced cooperation in connectivity, tourism, and energy sectors.
In an interview with a news agency, Khanal remarked on the historical and positive ties between the two nations, expressing hope for more high-level visits from both sides. This marks Khanal’s first visit to India since assuming office earlier this year.
When asked about the perception of India-Nepal relations, Khanal stated, “We truly have very good relations. This is a historical relationship that encompasses tourism, our river systems, our water, our energy, and our families. It is multifaceted in nature, and we have always had excellent relations with India. We see further opportunities to connect and want to advance what we have historically.”
Regarding Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s comments on cross-border issues, Khanal clarified that his ministry had already issued an official statement on the matter. He noted that Shah was responding to a parliamentary question related to “cross-border encroachments,” and his ministry had provided clarification on this issue.
Khanal also commented on Shah’s anticipated visit to India, stating, “No date has been set yet, but my visit suggests that there could be several high-level visits from both sides in the coming months.”
He reiterated the significance of India-Nepal relations, highlighting their historical context and connections across various sectors, including tourism and energy. Following a meeting with Khanal, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar announced the handover of 72 health facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects to Nepal as part of the reconstruction program following the 2015 earthquake.
