Kolkata, May 13: In a significant development in Burdwan district of West Bengal, police have arrested three brothers affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in connection with several serious criminal cases. This arrest has sparked a new political controversy in the region. BJP legislator Krishna Ghosh has accused the TMC of providing protection to criminal elements.
The arrested individuals include local TMC leader Babulal Sheikh, youth TMC leader Kochi Sheikh, and Chhattu Sheikh, all of whom are confirmed to be family members. They were taken to the Katwa sub-divisional hospital for mandatory medical examinations before being presented in a local court on Wednesday.
According to police officials, multiple cases have been registered against the accused under various serious sections of India’s newly implemented criminal code, the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Investigators allege that this group has been involved in intimidating locals and exerting their influence in the area, creating a climate of fear among residents.
Reports indicate that police have sought custody of the accused for further investigation. These arrests have heightened political tensions in Katwa, with leaders from opposing parties trading sharp accusations. Newly elected BJP legislator Krishna Ghosh stated, “Such anti-social elements thrived during the Trinamool regime. They are alleged to have received protection from the ruling establishment. Now, the administration is fulfilling its duty, and legal action will be taken against the accused.”
Meanwhile, the families of the accused have denied all allegations, claiming that the three have been falsely implicated in politically motivated cases. They assert that the police had issued summons to the accused before formally arresting them.
