Chennai, May 12: The political landscape of Tamil Nadu is witnessing a significant upheaval as internal strife within the AIADMK has spilled over into the assembly. Former Chief Minister E. Palaniswami (EPS) and senior leader S.P. Velumani have come face-to-face, each claiming to be the rightful leader of the party in the assembly, leading to a major leadership crisis.
This controversy emerged during the assembly proceedings on Monday. Reports indicate that both EPS and Velumani met separately with Pro Tem Speaker Karuppaiya, asserting that they have the majority support of AIADMK legislators. They also demanded the right to lead the party in the assembly.
The pressing question now is who will be recognized as the official leader of the AIADMK legislative party. Additionally, the authority to appoint a party whip and represent the party in the house has become a contentious issue.
Discussions are intensifying in Chennai’s political corridors regarding this dispute. Constitutional experts believe that the Speaker’s decision could have a significant impact on the future of the AIADMK. Typically, a leader is chosen in a meeting of the legislative party after elections, and this information is then communicated to the Speaker. In most cases, the party leadership or the general secretary’s recommendation is formally approved by the legislators.
However, the current situation is legally complex, with conflicting claims regarding party leadership and legislative support. Legal experts suggest that in such scenarios, the Speaker must determine which faction is recognized as the ‘real political party.’
Experts have referenced several Supreme Court rulings related to Maharashtra, stating that the decision on the real party plays a crucial role in determining legislative leadership. Nevertheless, the numerical strength within the assembly remains critically important.
It has been reported that if two-thirds of the 47 AIADMK legislators—at least 32—form a separate faction declaring themselves the real party or merge with another party, they may receive legal protection under anti-defection laws.
The situation remains highly sensitive, with all eyes now on the Speaker’s decision, which could shape the balance of power and leadership within the AIADMK.
