Royal Challengers Bengaluru star Virat Kohli endured a disappointing milestone night after registering a golden duck while chasing a modest target of 167 against Mumbai Indians in Raipur on Sunday, May 10.
Kohli, who was playing his 278th Indian Premier League match, equalling the number of appearances of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, fell while attempting to drive Deepak Chahar towards long-off but instead offered a catch at mid-off to Raj Bawa.
This marked Kohli’s second consecutive duck, having been dismissed for a two-ball duck against Lucknow Super Giants, where he was bowled by pacer Prince Yadav, highlighting a rare low for the veteran batter across successive innings.
Earlier in the match, Rohit Sharma, also featuring in his 278th IPL appearance, scored a quick 22 off 10 balls before being dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has not participated in the ongoing season after being sidelined due to a calf injury before the tournament began.
Against LSG, Kohli was undone by a sharp delivery from Prince Yadav, but against MI the dismissal came from an aggressive shot gone wrong. Deepak Chahar bowled a full, wide outswinger, and Kohli attempted to drive it over mid-off. However, he failed to generate the required power, with the bat face closing early and the ball coming off the inside half, resulting in a simple catch at a comfortable height for Bawa.
KOHLI’S RARE IPL DUCKS IN IPL HISTORY
Tonight’s, the May 10, dismissal against MI also marked Kohli’s 12th duck in IPL history and his second zero since April 23, 2023, when he fell first ball against Rajasthan Royals to Trent Boult.
Before these back-to-back ducks in the 2026 season, Kohli’s previous golden duck in an IPL run chase came way back in 2017 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, led by Gautam Gambhir, during the infamous match where RCB were bundled out for just 49 runs at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
The last instance of Kohli registering back-to-back ducks in the IPL came in 2022, against LSG on April 19 and Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 23.
Despite the setback, Kohli’s IPL 2026 campaign remains steady. He has already amassed 379 runs in 10 matches and is on course for another 600-plus run season, having crossed that milestone in each of the last three editions.
