
Udaipur, 15 November (Udaipur Kiran). The Anthropological Survey of India, Western Regional Centre, Udaipur, celebrated “Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas” on Saturday with great enthusiasm, dignity and cultural richness. The event highlighted the historical contributions of tribal communities, their cultural heritage and the significant role of tribal leaders in India’s freedom struggle.
The programme began at 10:30 am with the welcome of guests and floral greetings, followed by the inaugural address by Centre Head Nilanjan Khatua.
A documentary titled “Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas: Ek Nayak Ki Kahani”, produced by a team of the Anthropological Survey of India, was screened. The film effectively showcased the socio-cultural life, traditions and historical contributions of tribal communities.
Insightful Guest Lecture
The highlight of the event was a special lecture delivered by Dr. Kul Shekhar Vyas and Ms. Usha Devendra on the topic “Role of Tribal Communities in India’s Development.”
Dr. Vyas spoke about the struggles of tribal communities and elaborated on how Birsa Munda—revered as Dharti Aaba—led the Ulgulan movement to protect land, water and forests. He noted Birsa Munda’s courageous stand against conversion attempts by Christian missionaries and his leadership in empowering tribal rights.
Ms. Usha Devendra explained the purpose of celebrating Janajatiya Gaurav Diwas and why Birsa Munda is worshipped as a divine figure. She emphasised the importance of social awareness and distancing from harmful practices. Both speakers discussed in detail the knowledge systems, traditions and invaluable contributions of tribal communities to the national movement.
Cultural Performances and Museum Visit
The Indian Folk Art Mandal, Udaipur, presented a captivating puppet show on “Kaalibai’s Contribution to the Freedom Movement,” which received enthusiastic appreciation from the audience.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ajay Chaudhary. Later, students from Happy Home School and Government Sindhi Higher Secondary School, Pratap Nagar, Udaipur, were taken on a museum tour, where they explored tribal culture, artefacts and exhibitions showcasing the diversity of India’s tribal life.
