IND-W vs SA-W: Smriti Mandhana makes history, shatters Mithali Raj’s World Cup record

Smriti Mandhana has etched her name in history with a record-breaking performance in the Women’s World Cup final against South Africa in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2. The stylish opener has been in sublime form throughout the tournament, and her latest knock has taken her to new heights. With this knock, Smriti now holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a single edition of the Women’s ODI World Cup, surpassing the legendary Mithali Raj. Smriti’s tally currently stands at 416 runs, going past Mithali’s mark of 409, which she achieved in the 2017 World Cup in England — a campaign that saw India reach the final but narrowly miss out on the title.

This time, however, India seems well on track for a different outcome. Smriti, in tandem with Shafali Verma, gave India a flying start against the Proteas, with the pair racing past the 50-run partnership inside the first seven overs. Meanwhile, South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, remains the leading run-scorer in the ongoing edition with 470 runs to her name, but a big knock from Mandhana in the final could see her reclaim the top spot and finish the tournament as the highest run-getter.
