Jaipur, October 15 (Udaipur Kiran): In a major crackdown on narcotics trade, Jhalawar Police has invoked the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988 (PIT NDPS) against a habitual drug trafficker — marking the first-ever application of this stringent law in the district.
Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar informed that the action was taken against Shyamlal alias Shyama, son of Ramlal Banjara (46), a resident of Luhariya Dey village under Sadar Police Station, Jhalawar. The accused, a known drug mafia figure, has been detained and sent to the High Security Jail, Ajmer.
The PIT NDPS Act is used against hardened offenders repeatedly involved in drug trafficking, whose continued activities are deemed dangerous to public health and the national economy.
Government Issues Detention Order
Following a detailed proposal submitted by Jhalawar Police, the Home (Law) Department of the Rajasthan Government, through Secretary Ravi Sharma, issued a detention order on October 14 under Section 3 of the PIT NDPS Act.
After receiving the order, the police detained Shyamlal alias Shyama and sent him to Ajmer High Security Jail. The operation was conducted by a team formed under the supervision of the Sadar Police Station Officer.
Long Criminal Record
SP Amit Kumar revealed that Shyamlal has been involved in criminal activities since 1996, remaining active in the narcotics trade for several years. A drug addict himself, his intimidating nature prevented locals from coming forward with information.
He has 16 criminal cases registered against him, of which 8 have already resulted in convictions. His record includes five NDPS Act cases under Sadar Jhalawar, Suket, and Anantpura Kot Police Stations, along with cases of loot (2), attempt to murder (1), Arms Act (1), Excise Act (1), theft (2), assault (3), and damage to public property (1).
Preventive Action to Protect Public Welfare
SP Kumar added that considering the high likelihood of the accused continuing his illegal activities and the serious threat posed to public health and welfare, the police invoked this stringent preventive detention law to curb his operations.
