Leh, September 24 (Udaipur Kiran News): Violent protests broke out in Leh on Wednesday as students clashed with police and security forces while demanding full statehood for Ladakh. Agitators set fire to the BJP office, pelted stones at the police, and even torched a CRPF vehicle.
The protests were held in support of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for the last 15 days. Demonstrators had called for a shutdown today and later carried out a rally backing Wangchuk’s demands.
Led by Wangchuk, the protesting students and locals have put forward four key demands:
-
Grant of full statehood to Ladakh.
-
Constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule.
-
Separate Lok Sabha seats for Kargil and Leh.
-
Reservation of government jobs for local residents.
The next round of talks on these demands is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on October 6.
Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir were carved out as separate Union Territories in 2019, after the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A. At that time, the central government had assured that full statehood would be restored once the situation normalised.
