BHOPAL: The CBI’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Bhopal, has on Friday registered a case against two senior BSNL electrical wing officials for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a contractor for processing and clearing pending bills.The accused have been identified as Avnish Kumar Shukla, Chief Engineer (Electrical), BSNL, Bhopal, and V B Chakrapani, Superintending Engineer (Electrical), BSNL, Bhopal.According to the FIR registered on August 27, contractor Atul Kumar Mishra approached the CBI alleging that the two officials were demanding a bribe equivalent to 2% of the pending bill amount of around Rs 93 lakh for generating purchase orders, SES numbers and processing bills related to his firms.The complaint was submitted to the CBI on August 24 and was subsequently marked to an inspector for verification. During verification conducted on August 25 and 26 in the presence of independent witnesses, the alleged demand was corroborated, the FIR stated.The CBI alleged that the two officials demanded Rs 2 lakh each, amounting to Rs 4 lakh in total, as an undue advantage for processing and passing the contractor’s bills.The officials allegedly agreed to accept Rs 75,000 each as the first instalment of the demanded amount, according to the FIR.The agency has registered the case under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, relating to criminal conspiracy, and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, concerning bribery involving a public servant.
