Washington, July 15: President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the stringent sanctions proposed against Russia, supported by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, could potentially include Iran and Hezbollah. However, he noted that there has been no discussion regarding proposals related to countries like India and China.
During a meeting at the White House with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Saadi, Trump was asked if he would sign the legislation. He responded that lawmakers are considering expanding the scope of the sanctions package. He mentioned that this move could be made in honor of Graham, who was one of the strongest advocates for tough measures against Russia.
“I know Lindsey wanted this very much,” Trump said.
He further added that he believes they could include Iran, which would be a significant step. They might also incorporate Hezbollah into the sanctions.
Trump indicated that discussions on this proposal are ongoing, but there appears to be considerable support for moving it forward. “We are considering it seriously, and it is in honor of Lindsey, as this was his major issue. He wanted it more than anything else,” he stated.
When asked if secondary sanctions on countries like India and China would be included in this legislation, Trump replied that no decision has been made yet. “If it’s about secondary sanctions on China, India, and other countries, we will have to see. There has been no discussion on that yet,” he said.
This statement came during a lengthy discussion between Trump and the Iraqi Prime Minister regarding issues related to Iraq, Iran, and the Middle East. Trump reiterated that Iran’s influence in the region has significantly diminished.
“I think the Middle East is coming together now,” he said. “We are removing the bully from the Middle East. Iran was the bully in the region, intimidating Iraq and every other country.”
He added that there is no longer any fear, as their military strength has been greatly weakened.
