Bodies of 15 Indians from Vietnam Boat Tragedy Arrive in Mumbai


Mumbai, July 14: The bodies of 15 Indian citizens who lost their lives in a boat accident near Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, arrived at Mumbai Airport on Monday.

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam announced on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “The flight carrying the bodies of Indian citizens who tragically died in the boat accident on July 11 has just reached Mumbai.”

The embassy further mentioned, “The Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City will continue to work with the respective state governments to ensure that the bodies are delivered to their families as soon as possible. Our condolences and prayers are with the families of the deceased.”

State governments from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu will arrange for the final transportation of the bodies within their states.

Meanwhile, one Indian citizen injured in the tragic boat accident is currently receiving treatment in Phu Quoc. A medical procedure was successfully completed on Sunday evening, and he has been admitted to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday. Family members have also arrived in Vietnam.

The police in An Giang province, Vietnam, detained a local individual on Sunday in connection with alleged legal violations related to the tourist boat sinking and have initiated criminal proceedings against him.

The detained individual has been identified as Nguyen Hong Hai, a 57-year-old boat captain from An Giang province, who was temporarily residing in the Phu Quoc special area.

Initial reports indicate that around 32 Indian tourists were on the boat, with 17 hailing from Tamil Nadu, while others were from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala. The boat reportedly capsized while cruising in the southern marine area of Phu Quoc, a popular tourist destination in southern Vietnam. Rescue teams, locals, and emergency personnel promptly arrived at the scene to launch a large-scale rescue operation.
