
Baku, July 10: Indian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abhay Kumar, met with members of the Indian community on Friday to discuss upcoming activities and strengthen cultural ties.
During the meeting, Praveenkumar Ramachandran Nair and Anas Meerasahib, members of the Baku Malayali Association (BMA), shared details about their forthcoming events, including a cricket tournament.
Ambassador Kumar encouraged the BMA to increase participation from Azerbaijani players in the tournament to help popularize cricket in the country. He emphasized that sports serve as an excellent medium to enhance connections between the people of India and Azerbaijan, thereby strengthening cultural relations.
The Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan also reported that discussions included upcoming cultural programs by the BMA, such as the Onam festival. The Ambassador praised the association’s efforts, noting that such events play a crucial role in fostering cultural ties and mutual understanding between the two nations.
Prashant Mishra, President of the Indian Association of Azerbaijan, also met with Ambassador Kumar to discuss the association’s upcoming activities and its role in promoting India-Azerbaijan cultural relations.
Additionally, the Ambassador met with Amit Mohan Govil, Director of India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), who is in Baku for the Egmont Group’s plenary meeting. The Ambassador congratulated the FIU-IND for securing the runner-up position at the prestigious Best Egmont Case Award 2026 held in Baku.
Earlier on Thursday, Ambassador Kumar visited the ancient village of Khinalug, one of Azerbaijan’s oldest mountain villages, where he learned about its unique language, rich cultural traditions, and distinctive stone architecture. He toured the Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Khinalug, viewing rare archaeological finds, ancient manuscripts, and traditional items that reflect the village’s cultural heritage.
He also visited the Red Village, home to the Mountain Jewish community, which has preserved its unique language, traditions, and heritage for centuries. The Ambassador toured the historical Jewish sites and the Mountain Jewish Museum, where he met with the museum’s director, Igor Shaulov, to gain insights into the community’s rich history and cultural heritage.
