
Alexander Zverev put an end to British wildcard Arthur Fery’s remarkable Wimbledon story with a dominant semi-final victory on Centre Court on Friday (July 10). The second seed sealed a 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-4 win to book his place in the final at the All England Club for the first time.

The 23-year-old Arthur Fery, ranked 114 and given a wildcard, had become the story of the tournament. His run included five-set escapes and a dominant win over Flavio Cobolli. The home crowd packed Henman Hill and Centre Court, waving flags and chanting for their new hero.
Fery began brightly. He broke Zverev early in the first set and held serve with confidence, using his clean backhand and grass-court instincts. The set stayed level until 6-6. In the tiebreak, however, Zverev raised his level dramatically. Fery double-faulted and missed a forehand wide as the German raced to a 7-0 lead, taking the set 7-6(0).

The second set was one-way traffic. Alexander Zverev’s serve became almost untouchable. He lost just a handful of points on it all match. Arthur Fery managed only one game early on before the German’s powerful groundstrokes and aggressive returns took charge. Zverev broke three times to wrap up the set 6-2 in under half an hour.
Fery looked tired and started to net simple balls. The crowd fell quieter even as they still cheered every point the home player won.

In the third set Arthur Fery showed the fighting spirit that had carried him this far. He saved three break points with aces and brave net play to hold serve at 3-4. The fans rose to their feet once more, hoping for one last twist. But Alexander Zverev stayed clinical. He broke again for 5-4 and served out the match with authority, sealing his first Wimbledon final appearance.
Fery received a warm standing ovation as he left the court. Fans on Henman Hill, many of whom had arrived hours early and waited behind closed gates, still celebrated his achievement.

The win takes Alexander Zverev into his first Wimbledon final and keeps alive his dream of back-to-back Grand Slam titles. The German has looked transformed on grass this fortnight, more aggressive and confident than ever. He now waits for the winner of the other semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.
For Fery the fairytale ends in the last four, but the British No. 1-in-waiting leaves with huge credit and a new army of fans. He proved he belongs at this level and will surely return stronger.
