New Delhi, July 9: India and Afghanistan held the fourth meeting of their joint committee on Thursday in New Delhi, discussing a wide range of bilateral relations. The meeting reviewed cooperation in areas such as humanitarian aid, development assistance, food security, healthcare, capacity building, education, sports, trade, visas, and connectivity.
During the meeting, India reiterated its commitment to continue supporting the welfare and developmental needs of the Afghan people. The Afghan side expressed gratitude for India’s ongoing assistance and cooperation across various sectors. This information was shared in a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The meeting was co-chaired by M. Anand Prakash, Joint Secretary (PAI) in the Ministry of External Affairs, and Shoaib Barialai, Director General of the First Political Department of the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The MEA stated, “Both sides reiterated the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and agreed to stay in touch. The next meeting of the joint committee will be held at a mutually convenient time.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita, met with Afghanistan’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, Mawlavi Ataullah Omari, in New Delhi. They discussed the ongoing cooperation for the welfare and development of the Afghan people.
Margerita wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “Today, I met with Afghanistan’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, Mawlavi Ataullah Omari in New Delhi. We discussed India-Afghanistan relations and ongoing cooperation for the welfare and development of the Afghan people.”
Omari arrived in New Delhi on an official visit to strengthen ties between the two countries.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs had warmly welcomed Omari upon his arrival in New Delhi, expressing hope for fruitful discussions on issues of mutual interest.
Following the recent deadly airstrikes in Afghanistan by Pakistan, India reaffirmed its commitment to support Kabul through aid and development projects.
During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the airstrikes, which resulted in the loss of many innocent lives, including women and children. He expressed condolences for the victims and reiterated strong support for Afghanistan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He added, “Our humanitarian assistance cooperation with Afghanistan continues. We are sending medicines and other essential aid, as well as offering development projects to improve the lives of the people there. This cooperation will persist.”
