Maharashtra Assembly Proceedings Suspended Amid Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Mumbai, July 6: The ongoing heavy rainfall and strong winds in Maharashtra have led Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to urge citizens to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel. During a discussion in the Assembly regarding the current situation in the state, the Chief Minister noted that unusual circumstances have arisen due to changing natural cycles, and the government is fully alert and engaged in relief and rescue operations.

He reported that on Monday, winds reached speeds of approximately 50 kilometers per hour in several parts of the state, resulting in nearly 350 fallen trees in just one day. The wind speed is expected to escalate to 70-80 kilometers per hour by Tuesday afternoon, potentially worsening the situation further.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that a building that collapsed in Mumbai on Monday was an unauthorized structure. Additionally, a landslide incident was reported near the missing link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. He emphasized that such conditions are emerging due to the changing natural cycles.

All government agencies are working at war footing to safely evacuate people stranded in various areas of the state. The government is closely monitoring the situation and will provide detailed information after assessing the conditions on Wednesday.

Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in light of the strong winds and heavy rainfall, particularly urging the youth to refrain from visiting tourist spots and natural areas.

Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar also appealed for cooperation and vigilance from everyone, considering the serious situation of excessive rainfall in the state. He announced the decision to suspend the proceedings of the House in light of the current conditions.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, raised the issue of 12 fatalities in Mumbai due to heavy rain. He insisted that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should be held accountable in this matter. He also mentioned the closure of the missing link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and demanded a detailed statement from the government in the House regarding the entire situation.

It is noteworthy that the Mumbai-Goa highway is completely closed to traffic. Citizens are requested to use the old Pune-Mumbai highway. Traffic is halted due to landslides at Kashid and Tamhini Ghat, while flooding on the Wakan-Sukeli-Khind highway has completely blocked traffic.
