Brazil midfielder Casemiro struggled to contain his emotions after Selecao’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to a painful end on Sunday, breaking down during a post-match interview following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Norway national football team in the Round of 16.
The veteran midfielder was visibly emotional while speaking to CazeTV after the final whistle in New Jersey. As he attempted to reflect on Brazil’s exit, Casemiro paused repeatedly, his voice cracking before he covered his face. The journalists conducting the interview briefly halted their questions and comforted the 34-year-old as he tried to compose himself.
“It’s difficult to find… to find words. I’m sorry,” Casemiro said. “It’s difficult to find words at the moment. It’s always been a dream to win the World Cup.”
The emotional exchange came after Brazil suffered one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. A clinical brace from Erling Haaland secured a historic 2-1 victory for Norway, sending them into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time while eliminating the five-time champions.
Brazil created enough opportunities to take the game beyond 90 minutes but were repeatedly denied by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, who delivered an inspired performance. The experienced shot-stopper saved an early penalty from Bruno Guimaraes before producing a series of crucial interventions to frustrate Brazil’s attack.
ANCELOTTI URGES BRAZIL TO LOOK AHEAD
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted the defeat was difficult to accept but backed his side to emerge stronger.
“Everyone is profoundly disappointed,” Ancelotti said. “I think we didn’t do a spectacular World Cup but we did a good one and we even deserved to win this match at some points. This is a defeat, and we have to continue doing our jobs, continuing to improve. It’s not the end, it’s the beginning of a new cycle.”
Vinicius Junior said the result had left the players devastated.
“It’s a very sad day for all of us. Being eliminated from a World Cup is always a huge blow,” he said
