New Delhi, July 5: The first United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance is set to take place in Geneva, Switzerland. Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, will lead the Indian delegation during the dialogue on July 6-7.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Global Dialogue on AI Governance is a universal, multi-stakeholder UN forum established under General Assembly Resolution 79/325. This event follows the adoption of the Global Digital Compact as part of the Pact of the Future in September 2024.
The Ministry further stated that this dialogue provides an opportunity to advance international governance of artificial intelligence in a manner that complements international, regional, national, and multi-stakeholder efforts.
In a statement, the Ministry noted, “With an independent international scientific panel on AI that promotes scientific understanding, transparency, accountability, and robust human oversight, this dialogue will help build capacity to steer AI systems towards sustainable development, particularly in developing countries.” The co-chairs had also gathered suggestions from various stakeholders, including an in-person consultation during the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi in February 2026, based on the terms of reference and procedures adopted in August 2025.
During the global dialogue on AI in Geneva, the annual report of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI (IISPA) will be presented. This report provides the first independent scientific assessment of AI capabilities, emerging opportunities, and potential risks.
The dialogue will focus on four thematic clusters, including the social and economic impacts of AI, bridging the AI divide, safe and trustworthy AI, and human rights in the context of AI.
UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has appointed El Salvador’s representative, Agriselda Lopez, and Estonia’s permanent representative, Rein Tammsaar, as co-chairs for the 2026 AI Dialogue.
According to a statement from the UN, the first session of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance will be held in Geneva on July 6-7, with a second session scheduled for May 2027 in New York.
