History Sheeter Attacks Police Officer During Interrogation in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, July 3: A significant incident occurred in the Chandola area of Ahmedabad on Thursday during a police interrogation. A history sheeter attacked a senior officer of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch with a knife after the recovery of illegal weapons. The officer sustained injuries, and in response, the accused was shot in the leg.

According to police, the Crime Branch team received a tip-off that Mohammad Kaleem, also known as Kaleem Bhai Akbarkhan Pathan (34), had hidden illegal weapons near Chandola Lake. Acting on this information, the team conducted a raid and recovered four weapons along with cartridges.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sharad Singhal reported that during the interrogation, the accused suddenly picked up a knife and attacked him. “We were questioning him when he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and attempted to attack my throat. I raised my left hand in defense, injuring myself. He struck at me two or three times,” he said.

Singhal noted that the accused appeared to be under the influence of drugs and refused to drop the knife despite repeated requests. “We asked him to throw the knife, but he did not comply. I then used Inspector Imran Ghasura’s service revolver to shoot him in the leg, injuring him,” he added.

Both the police officer and the accused were taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that Kaleem is now out of danger, while Joint CP Sharad Singhal suffered an injury to his left hand but is expected to return to duty soon.

The officer clarified that the accused was unaware he was speaking to the Joint Commissioner, as he was in plain clothes at the time. Singhal acknowledged that conducting the interrogation at the scene was a mistake and that the process would be reviewed in the future.

The interrogation took place in a small hut with only a few officers present, as the accused had already been searched prior to this incident. Investigations revealed that the accused had obtained the weapons from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. Police are now looking into who supplied the weapons and for what purpose.

Kaleem is a laborer residing in the Shah Alam area of Ahmedabad and has over 35 criminal cases registered against him, including attempted murder, robbery, theft, and possession of illegal weapons. Police have filed a case against him under the Arms Act, along with charges of attempted murder.

He had previously faced action under the PASA Act in 2018 and has been subjected to preventive measures multiple times. Authorities are also investigating who else may be involved in the supply of these weapons and their intended use.
