Jaipur, June 30: Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed gratitude to BJP workers and the public for their warm welcome upon his return to Jaipur after signing the memorandum of understanding for the Yamuna water project. During his address, he targeted former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the Congress party, accusing them of making promises to provide Yamuna water to Shekhawati but failing to make serious efforts to advance the project over the years.
At various locations from Jaipur Airport to the Chief Minister’s residence, BJP workers, representatives, and citizens welcomed him with flower showers, turbans, garlands, and water pots, honoring him with the title ‘Bhagirath’ for bringing Yamuna water to Rajasthan.
Sharma stated that June 29 marked a historic day for Rajasthan. He congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the state’s 80 million residents for the Yamuna water agreement and thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister of Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for their support.
He highlighted that the project would provide Yamuna water to Jhunjhunu, Churu, and Sikar districts, promoting agriculture, tourism, and industry in the Shekhawati region, thereby creating new employment opportunities.
Criticizing Congress, Sharma noted that during the tenure of Congress governments in both Rajasthan and Haryana, there was no effective coordination to advance this project. He also claimed that the Haryana Congress had mentioned in its manifesto the cancellation of the Yamuna water agreement, raising questions about Gehlot’s commitment to the project, given his presence at the same platform.
Sharma reiterated his promise to bring Yamuna water to Shekhawati, stating that the project is now being realized with the cooperation of the central and Haryana governments. Following the signing of the MOU on February 17, 2024, a task force was formed, and a detailed project report (DPR) was prepared.
According to the Chief Minister, the project, costing over ₹34,000 crore, will involve laying a 3.6-meter diameter pipeline to transport Yamuna water to the Shekhawati region.
He mentioned that the state government has prepared a clear roadmap for development and is also accelerating pending water projects such as the Ramjal Setu Link Project, Indira Gandhi Canal Project, Ganga Canal, Devasa, and Mahi.
Sharma claimed that during the previous Congress government, Rajasthan was often in the news for paper leaks, corruption, gang activities, and crimes against women, while the current BJP government focuses on employment, farmers’ welfare, and industrial development. He noted that farmers in 26 districts are receiving daytime electricity, and Rajasthan is also supplying electricity to other states.
