Gandhinagar, August 28, 2026: Gujarat has taken a significant step towards bringing cutting-edge science into competitive sports with the launch of India’s first state-level Sports Genomics Programme, an initiative that seeks to combine genetic research with sports science, physiology and nutrition to identify, train and develop athletes more scientifically.
Implemented by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) under the state’s Department of Science and Technology, the programme will study the genetic, physiological and performance characteristics of athletes and build a long-term scientific database that could help shape personalised training, nutrition, recovery and injury-management strategies.
The initiative comes at a particularly important time for Gujarat, which is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is seeking to strengthen its high-performance sports ecosystem.
From the Playing Field to the Laboratory
At the heart of the programme is a relatively new area of sports science — sports genomics, which examines how genetic variations may be associated with characteristics relevant to athletic performance.
Researchers will look at factors such as endurance, power, muscle composition, metabolism, response to exercise, recovery and susceptibility to certain sports-related injuries. The objective, however, is not to search for a single “champion gene”. Athletic performance is influenced by a complex interaction of genetics, training, coaching, nutrition, lifestyle, environment and access to sporting infrastructure.
Gujarat Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia said the initiative is intended to make athlete identification and development more scientific, precise and evidence-based. Scientists have already begun collecting samples from athletes across sporting disciplines.
The first set of samples has reportedly been collected from tennis players associated with the Gujarat State Tennis Association, while the next phase is expected to cover athletes in archery, fencing, judo and shooting associated with the Vijayi Bharat Foundation. The state has set a target of collecting around 2,000 samples during the first year.
10,000 Samples Over Five Years
The programme has been designed as a five-year research initiative. Earlier details released about the project indicate a target of approximately 10,000 genetic samples, with around 2,000 samples expected to be collected annually. The programme has been allocated ₹26.05 crore over five years, according to reporting on the project.
The sampling programme is expected to draw athletes from across Gujarat and cover multiple sporting disciplines, including endurance, power, team and skill-based sports.
Different age groups are also expected to be studied, including athletes below 14 years, those aged 14 to under 18, and those above 18. State and national-level champions will be an important research group, allowing scientists to compare genetic, physiological and performance characteristics across different levels of sporting achievement.
A Proposed Genome Database for Gujarat’s Athletes
One of the most ambitious components of the project is the proposed Gujarat Athlete Genome Database (G-AGD).
The database is expected to bring together genetic information with physiological measurements and actual sporting-performance data. Such an integrated dataset could eventually allow researchers and coaches to study why athletes respond differently to training loads, exercise intensity, recovery protocols and nutritional interventions.
The long-term vision is to move away from a largely one-size-fits-all approach to athlete development and towards more personalised programmes.
For example, genomic information, when interpreted alongside physiological testing and an athlete’s actual performance, could potentially help researchers investigate whether certain athletes have a greater predisposition towards endurance, power or particular responses to exercise. It could also contribute to research on injury susceptibility and rehabilitation.
GBRC’s recruitment documents confirm that the research programme is already being built as a specialised scientific project, with positions requiring expertise in areas including genomics, molecular biology, next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics.
Gujarat’s 2030 Commonwealth Games Ambition
The timing of the initiative is significant.
With Gujarat preparing for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the state is attempting to build a sports ecosystem that goes beyond stadiums, coaching academies and conventional talent scouting.
The genomics programme could provide another layer of scientific information for identifying promising athletes and designing long-term development pathways. Researchers and sports administrators hope that such an approach will allow talented athletes to be identified earlier and supported with more individualised training and nutrition strategies.
The move also fits into Gujarat’s wider push to establish itself as a sports and high-performance hub, with major investments in sporting infrastructure and ambitions of hosting international sporting events.
Science, Not a Shortcut to Sporting Success
Experts caution that genomics should be viewed as an additional scientific tool rather than a replacement for traditional sporting assessment.
Genes alone cannot determine whether an athlete will become a champion. Coaching quality, training consistency, nutrition, psychology, recovery, social circumstances, infrastructure and competition experience remain critical factors.
The scientific value of the Gujarat programme will therefore depend not simply on the size of its genetic database, but on how responsibly genetic information is interpreted alongside actual performance data.
There is also a significant issue of data privacy. Genetic information is highly sensitive, making informed consent, secure storage, restricted access and strong governance essential to the programme. Reporting on the initiative has highlighted plans for safeguards, including mechanisms to protect athlete identities.
A New Chapter in Indian Sports Science
Gujarat’s Sports Genomics Programme marks an important shift in the way Indian states are approaching athletic development. If successfully implemented, it could create one of the country’s most comprehensive datasets linking genetics, physiology and sporting performance.
For Gujarat, the ambition is clear: identify talent earlier, understand athletes better and develop them with scientific precision.
For Indian sport, the bigger question will be whether this experiment can demonstrate that genomics, when combined with sound coaching and sports science, can translate laboratory insights into measurable gains on the field.
The search for India’s next generation of champions may now be taking place not only on tracks, courts and fields — but also inside the laboratory.
