The draft electoral roll released by Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer on Tuesday (September 1, 2026) showed a total of 2,06,88,487 voter deletions across the State’s 288 assembly constituencies. after a State-wide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) carried out in the past few months. From an electoral roll of 9,78,54,049 (over 9.78 crore), a total of 7,71,65,562 (79.86%) names were retained, and the remaining 21.14% were deleted due to them being either already enrolled, dead, permanently shifted, or ‘untraceable/absent’.

The district of Thane saw the highest share of deletions, with over 38% of the names deleted after the SIR, followed by the districts of Mumbai City (37.2%), Mumbai Suburban (33.95%), Pune (31.97%), Nagpur (31.11%), and Palghar (28.14%).

Of the 9.78 crore names in the electoral roll before the SIR, a total of 76,76,135 or 76.76 lakh (7.8%), were deleted as they were deemed to have shifted permanently, and 75,41,229, or 7.7%, were ‘untraceable/absent’, whereas 34,82,231, or 3.6%, of the voters were dead during the SIR process that happened over the past few months. A total of 17,66,502 (17.66 lakh or 1.8%) of the names were deleted because they were already enrolled.

The largest share of deletions was seen in the districts with the largest cities of the State. The share of deletions in each district, due to different reasons, is shown in the chart below. Thane, which saw a total of 38.18% deletions, 23.4% of which (around 17 lakh names) were ‘Untraceable/Absent’. Similarly, Pune also showed almost 17.8 lakh (or 19.9%) deletions due to the voters being ‘untraceable/absent’.
