Anupam Kher has opened on the changes he has experienced as an actor over the years. The veteran actor-filmmaker spoke about his evolving relationship with performance, the importance of vulnerability and the confidence he gained through his training. The actor recently shared a series of photographs on Instagram featuring characters from different stages of his career. Alongside the images, Anupam Kher looked back at his journey from the National School of Drama to his current phase in the film industry.

Anupam Kher calls actors vulnerable

Anupam Kher believes acting requires performers to confront emotions that people may otherwise keep private. He said actors have to draw from their own experiences while portraying feelings such as grief, fear, love and insecurity. “HEART AND CRAFT OF AN ACTOR! Actors are vulnerable people. We willingly expose emotions that most people spend their lives trying to hide. Grief, fear, jealousy, love, joy, insecurity… we have to go looking for them inside ourselves. So yes, I think actors are also very brave,” he wrote.The actor also explained why success alone cannot guarantee an authentic performance. According to him, an actor needs technical preparation and emotional depth when facing the camera.“Of course, acting can bring fame, money and luxury. But none of these can help you when the camera comes close and you have to reveal something truthful. For that you need craft, but you also need a certain kind of heart. Sometimes even a broken one!”

Actor recalls entering films

Anupam Kher also revisited the early years of his career. He said his National School of Drama training gave him the confidence to enter the film industry without a godfather. “I had come into films with no godfather, but with the training and confidence of the #NationalSchoolOfDrama. Somewhere I was constantly saying, “Look what I can do. Look how different I can be.” He suggested that the desire to establish himself was natural at that stage. However, his priorities have changed considerably with experience.

Anupam Kher says he has changed

According to Anupam Kher, the past decade has brought a noticeable shift in his approach to acting. He now prefers discovering the complexities within a character rather than focusing on proving his abilities. “Maybe that was necessary then. But over the last ten years, something has changed. I am much more relaxed. I don’t feel the same need to impress. Instead, I have started enjoying the uncertainty of a character his silences, contradictions, weaknesses, even his foolishness. I challenge myself more now, but strangely, with much less anxiety.”The actor also connected this change with growing older. He said experience has encouraged him to remain curious about aspects of acting that he has yet to understand. “Perhaps that is one of the nicer things about growing older as an actor: you stop trying to show how much you know… and start becoming curious about how much you still don’t know.
