Jaipur to Get AI-Powered Traffic Signals; Fixed Timers Set to Be Replaced After Successful Trial | Udaipur Kiran


Jaipur, July 13: In a major technological upgrade for urban traffic management, Jaipur is set to introduce an Artificial Intelligence-based Intelligent Traffic Management System (AI-ITMS) that will automatically control traffic signals based on real-time vehicle movement, replacing conventional fixed-timer signals.

The initiative, launched under the guidance of Rajeev Kumar Sharma, has successfully completed a 39-day pilot project at Jaipur’s busy Ram Bagh Circle. The trial was conducted by Jaipur Traffic Police in collaboration with Data Core Infotech.

According to officials, the successful pilot has paved the way for expansion of the AI-based system to 253 major intersections out of the city’s 423 traffic junctions. The project was monitored under the leadership of Yogesh Goyal.

How the AI System Works

Unlike conventional traffic signals that operate on fixed green and red light durations, the new AI-ITMS uses smart cameras to continuously monitor vehicle density and queue lengths on every road approaching an intersection.

The system automatically adjusts signal timings in real time. Roads with heavier traffic receive longer green signals, while less congested roads get shorter green phases. The entire process functions autonomously without requiring manual intervention from traffic personnel.

Significant Gains During Trial

Officials said the pilot project, conducted between June 3 and July 11, delivered encouraging results. During the trial period, the AI system managed traffic flow for more than 488,000 vehicles without human intervention.

Vehicle waiting times were reduced significantly, with motorists saving between 8 and 45 seconds per lane. The average green signal duration recorded during the trial was 33.63 seconds.

The smoother traffic movement also contributed to environmental benefits. Authorities estimate that approximately 2,535 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions were prevented during the 39-day trial, averaging about 65 kilograms per day.

AI Cameras to Detect Traffic Violations

The AI-powered system will also strengthen traffic enforcement. Smart cameras can automatically identify traffic violations such as overspeeding, red-light jumping, wrong-side driving and lane discipline breaches.

According to project officials, a single camera can scan around 4,200 vehicles daily and automatically identify hundreds of violation cases. The system will also be capable of detecting vehicles with pending challans and instantly transmitting information to the control room.

Future Plans Include Green Corridors for Emergency Vehicles

Project developers said the next phase will focus on synchronising multiple intersections, allowing AI systems at different junctions to communicate with each other and manage traffic across entire routes.

Future upgrades are expected to include automatic priority signals for ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and VIP movements, helping emergency services navigate through traffic without delays.

Officials believe the technology will reduce congestion, save fuel, lower emissions and allow traffic police personnel to focus more on accident-prone zones, schools, markets and other sensitive locations rather than manually regulating signals at intersections.
