India-EU FTA to Enhance Cooperation Opportunities: Ambassador Gupts Key Talks with German MPs

Berlin, July 14: India’s Ambassador to Germany, Ajit Gupt, engaged in significant discussions with Dirk Wiese, a member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and Vice-Chair of the India-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group, to explore ways to strengthen the multifaceted strategic partnership between the two nations.

The Indian Embassy in Berlin shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that Ambassador Gupt met with Wiese on July 10, 2026. The talks focused on enhancing the India-Germany strategic partnership, increasing parliamentary exchanges, and fostering cooperation between Indian states and German federal states (Länder).

Ambassador Gupt also met with Bundestag member and Transatlantic Coordinator Metin Hakverdi. This meeting addressed opportunities arising from the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to deepen the India-Germany strategic partnership.

The embassy noted on ‘X’ that Ambassador Gupt had a prior meeting with Hakverdi on July 9, 2026, where they discussed strengthening the strategic partnership, leveraging opportunities from the India-EU FTA, and enhancing defense and security cooperation, along with global and regional issues.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the G-7 summit in Avignon, France, where both leaders discussed ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed the progress in India-Germany relations and expressed satisfaction over the new momentum in their strategic partnership following the completion of negotiations for the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement earlier this year.

2026 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Germany. On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in various sectors, including trade and investment, defense and security, green and sustainable development, technology, innovation, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

This was the second meeting between the two leaders this year, during which they welcomed the signing of a roadmap for defense industry cooperation and the introduction of transit visa exemptions for Indian citizens traveling through Germany.

Chancellor Merz invited Prime Minister Modi to participate in the 8th India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) scheduled to take place in Germany later this year.
