PM Modi Highlights Football Fever in Indonesia

Jakarta, July 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a tour of three countries: Indonesia, New Zealand, and Australia. While addressing the Indian community in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, he mentioned the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The tournament is being held from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 104 matches among 48 nations in 16 cities.

During his speech, PM Modi remarked, “There is a football fever sweeping the world right now. Here in Indonesia, the passion for football is tremendous. You all have brought that energy and enthusiasm here, and it is evident. It is quite a coincidence that whenever I have visited Indonesia, the FIFA World Cup has been in full swing.”

He added, “The first event took place in Jakarta in 1998. Then we met in Bali in 2022, and now again in Jakarta in 2026. In all three instances, the echo of football has resonated in Indonesia, but the ‘Man of the Match’ in these events has been you all, the people of Indonesia. You have organized such a grand event and have become a living picture of magnificent India. So many people have gathered here. This time, I am not alone; my dear friend President Prabowo Subianto has also joined me.”

Notably, during the first phase of his three-country tour, PM Modi was awarded Indonesia’s highest honor, the ‘Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia’, for his role in strengthening ties between India and Indonesia. He announced that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore will establish its first overseas campus in Java, Indonesia. Additionally, both countries have signed agreements in health, education, and other sectors.
