Mumbai, July 7: In response to the heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, the state’s Minister for Women and Child Development, Aditi Tatkare, conducted an assessment of the flood situation in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and other affected districts on Monday.
The review was held at the State Emergency Operations Centre, in collaboration with State Disaster Management Director Bhalchandra Chavan.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday.
Minister Tatkare emphasized that the next 48 hours are crucial for both coastal districts and instructed local authorities to implement all necessary precautionary measures immediately.
To address potential emergency situations related to the rainfall, a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed and kept on standby in Mahad. Additionally, a formal request has been made to deploy an extra team of 145 rescue personnel to ensure swift and effective action in the Sudhagad and Roha areas.
Minister Tatkare stated that she is in continuous contact with various organizations in Karjat and Khopoli that are actively working on the ground to assist citizens during the floods. She assured that the state government would provide all necessary resources to these organizations and utilize their services in other affected areas if required.
She mentioned that they are closely monitoring the flood situation in the state from the State Emergency Operations Centre, ensuring that the entire system is on high alert for the safety of citizens. All security and rescue agencies are fully prepared to effectively handle any emergencies.
For safety reasons, Minister Tatkare has urged all citizens to venture out only when absolutely necessary. She advised people to avoid non-essential travel and to take care of themselves and those around them.
This initiative by Minister Tatkare is significant as Raigad has been one of the most affected districts due to continuous rainfall and strong winds. The monsoon-related issues have severely impacted the state’s transport system, with traffic on the crucial Mumbai-Goa National Highway being halted for over 32 hours, leaving thousands of passengers stranded in the Raigad district.
