Bengaluru, July 3: Karnataka police have arrested three individuals in connection with the mining accident that occurred in Bengaluru. The incident took place early Thursday morning at a crusher unit located in Madapattana, Bengaluru South Taluk, resulting in the deaths of seven workers and injuries to five others.
The case was registered based on a complaint filed by worker Gopikrishnan under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). S. Girish, the Inspector General of Police for the Central Zone, stated that the accident is linked to two nearby mines owned by different proprietors.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Panduranga, the owner of Sai Ram Crusher, Lokesh, the mine in-charge, and Raju, the local supervisor. According to police, all three are currently in custody for questioning. Panduranga had leased the Basaveshwara Crusher and was operating the mine. The police may also interrogate Uday Shankar, the owner of Kaveri Crusher, and D. Anandswamy, the owner of Basaveshwara Crusher, as part of the investigation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the seven workers were killed when a large boulder was dislodged by a JCB machine operating in an upper mine. Gopi, a Tamil Nadu worker who narrowly escaped, alleged that workers in the upper mine failed to warn those working below before removing the stone, leading to the tragic incident. Police reported that some bodies were severely mutilated, making identification difficult. Heavy machinery on-site, including a tractor and a tipper, also sustained significant damage.
The deceased have been identified as Ramu, Rajpal Singh, Satyanarayan Singh, Ram Avatar Singh, Rajendra Prasad, Nuhar, and Bhuvaneshwar Singh. According to police, one of the victims was from Yadgir district in Karnataka, while the others were from Madhya Pradesh.
In response to the incident, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that a detailed report has been requested from officials. He assured that action would be initiated following the report, and compensation would be announced once all information is gathered.
