Portugal forward Rafael Leao could find himself at the centre of an unwanted disciplinary headache just days before the FIFA World Cup 2026 after being sent off for violent conduct during his side’s international friendly against Chile. While the AC Milan winger is certain to miss Portugal’s final warm-up game against Nigeria, there remains uncertainty over whether the punishment could extend into the World Cup itself.
Leao was shown a straight red card during Portugal’s 2-0 win over Chile after becoming involved in a heated altercation with defender Ivan Roman. The incident has now left Portugal waiting for FIFA’s disciplinary decision ahead of their World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17.

The flashpoint arrived just before halftime following a routine challenge involving Joao Cancelo and Chile right-back Felipe Faundez near the corner flag. What initially appeared to be a minor confrontation quickly escalated as players from both teams rushed into the area.
Leao and Roman soon became the central figures in the scuffle. The Portuguese winger exchanged shoves with the Chile defender before appearing to strike him in the face. Referee Luca Zufferli immediately intervened and, after briefly assessing the situation, produced straight red cards for both players.
Even Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo attempted to plead Leao’s case, but the referee remained unmoved. Leao was forced to leave the field moments before halftime as Portugal eventually secured victory through goals from Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes.
The dismissal has now raised questions about whether the AC Milan star could be unavailable when Portugal begin their World Cup campaign in Houston later this month.
WHY DID RAFAEL LEAO GET SUSPENDED?
Leao’s red card was issued for violent conduct, which is treated more seriously than a standard dismissal for a professional foul or reckless challenge.
According to reports, the winger repeatedly shoved Roman during the confrontation before appearing to strike the Chile defender during the melee. The referee deemed the incident severe enough to warrant a straight red card.
As a result, Leao will automatically miss Portugal’s final World Cup preparation match against Nigeria on June 11.
Ordinarily, suspensions picked up in international friendlies are served in subsequent friendly matches. However, FIFA’s disciplinary regulations allow for additional sanctions when a player is dismissed for serious foul play or violent conduct.
That distinction has now placed Leao’s World Cup availability under scrutiny.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will be hoping FIFA views the incident as an isolated moment rather than conduct worthy of a longer suspension, particularly given Leao’s importance to the national team.
The 26-year-old is expected to play a key role alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva as Portugal target a deep run in North America.
WILL RAFAEL LEAO STAY SUSPENDED FOR WORLD CUP OPENER?
At this stage, there is no confirmed decision from FIFA regarding Leao’s World Cup participation.
The matter will likely depend on the referee’s report and whether FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee decides the incident warrants additional punishment beyond the automatic one-match suspension.
In most cases, red cards received in friendly matches do not carry over into official competitions. Recent examples suggest suspensions are usually restricted to future friendly fixtures.
However, violent conduct is treated differently under FIFA regulations.
Because Leao was dismissed for an alleged act of violence rather than a routine football offence, FIFA has the authority to extend the suspension into competitive matches if it believes the incident merits a harsher sanction.
Should that happen, Portugal could be forced to begin their World Cup campaign without one of their most dangerous attacking players.
For now, though, Leao remains available for Portugal’s Group K fixtures against DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia unless FIFA announces otherwise.
