Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 15, has joined the big league. The wonderkid who took the Indian Premier League (IPL), and along with it, the world by storm, was on Saturday named in the senior men’s squad for Ireland, England and the Asian Games. Sooryavanshi (15 years, 71 days as of Saturday) is the youngest ever to be picked for the senior men’s side. Powered with a natural ability for clean-hitting and unmatched confidence, Sooryavanshi earned the admiration of several cricket greats with his exploits. From Sachin Tendulkar to Sunil Gavaskar to Nasser Hussain, the list is long.
In the recently concluded IPL 2026, where almost all top batters in the world competed, including Virat Kohli, Sooryavanshi was the only one to score over 750 runs. During the course of the tournament, in which Sooryavanshi batted with a stupendous strike rate of 237.31, Sooryavanshi hit 72 sixes to break Chris Gayle’s 14-year record for most maximums in a single edition.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was effusive in his praise for Sooryavanshi.
“What do you say? For a young kid, what he can do. You saw even in the playoffs, almost single-handedly he carried Rajasthan Royals. For a young kid, I don’t need to spell it out how well he is batting. And it’s not just this season, he had a great start last season,” Agarkar said, while explaining the reason behind picking Sooryavanshi.
In IPL 2025, Sooryavanshi slammed a 35-ball ton, the second-fastest in IPL history. In IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi hit another ton. He could have easily got two more, but got out in the nineties on two occasions.

“For a young kid in a competition that’s as competitive and as high-pressure an environment, how explosive he is and how game-changing he can be. For those who have watched cricket, especially T20 cricket, we have watched high hopes of him, he just has picked himself really,” Agarkar added.
The India vs Ireland two-T20I series starts on June 26. The India vs England T20Is start on July 1. Sooryavanshi is currently in Sri Lanka with the India A side for a tri-series
