New Delhi, June 6: Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel at an Indian Oil fuel station on Friday, coinciding with World Environment Day. He described this initiative as a historic step towards a greener future.
E85 is a fuel blend consisting of 80-85% ethanol and 14-19% petrol, specifically designed for flex-fuel vehicles. In a post on the social media platform X, Minister Puri stated, “On the occasion of World Environment Day, inspired by the vision of our Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a clean, green, and energy-secure India, I inaugurated E85 fuel at petrol pumps in Delhi for flex-fuel vehicles.”
He further emphasized that this initiative is not only significant for India’s energy sector but also serves as an additional source of income for farmers. “This initiative will ensure prosperity and advancement in the lives of our energy providers,” he added.
According to the Union Minister, the 100% self-reliant E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles is a milestone that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 61% compared to petrol and will be considerably cheaper. The price of E85 fuel in New Delhi has been set at ₹82.12 per liter, making it ₹20 cheaper than the current price of regular petrol, which is ₹102.12 per liter.
He also mentioned that the technologies to adapt vehicles to this green fuel are largely indigenous. The development of such fuels and technologies will accelerate India’s green energy transition, significantly contribute to the country’s energy security efforts, and reduce energy import bills.
