Mumbai, May 18: Actress Anupriya Goenka is currently in the spotlight for her upcoming film ‘Bombay Stories’, which is being showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. Reaching Cannes is a significant achievement for any artist, and for Anupriya, this opportunity is particularly special as it marks her debut in independent cinema.
Directed by Rahat Shah Kazmi, the film is inspired by the renowned writer Saadat Hasan Manto’s famous story ‘Hatak’. It portrays a segment of society that is often not openly discussed. In ‘Bombay Stories’, Anupriya plays the role of a sex worker, alongside co-stars Mouni Roy and Sushmita Singh, highlighting the lives, struggles, societal perceptions, and hidden emotions of sex workers.
Speaking about her character, Anupriya expressed, “I have long wanted to be a part of independent cinema. I am thrilled that my first film is based on Manto’s story. The word ‘Hatak’ means insult, and the film revolves around this sentiment. My character tries to understand herself amidst societal judgments and perceptions.”
Describing her character further, she said, “Saugandhi is a woman who has accepted her life as it is, yet she yearns for love and respect. She wishes to be seen not just as a body but as a human being and a woman. I found many of my own emotions reflected in this character. Portraying her allowed me to understand and feel various aspects of a woman.”
Regarding sex work, Anupriya stated, “If a person chooses this work of their own free will, it is their right and decision. It should be viewed like any other profession. However, when a woman is forced into this line of work, stripped of her rights, or not treated with respect, it becomes wrong and tragic.”
She added, “In society, sex workers are often viewed merely as objects, while they too have dreams, emotions, and a need for respect. Until someone is coerced into this work against their will, society should not have the right to judge them.”
