Delhi Police Recover Stolen Idol of Lord Shani, Two Arrested

New Delhi, May 16: In a swift operation, the Delhi Police have resolved the case of the stolen ancient idol of Lord Shani, which was taken from the Shani Temple in Chandni Chowk, within just two days. Two suspects have been arrested, and all stolen items have been recovered.

According to a press note released by the police on Friday, the stolen idol, made of Ashtadhatu, is estimated to be worth around 5 to 6 lakh rupees. The investigation involved analyzing footage from over 300 CCTV cameras, which helped identify the main suspect.

The incident came to light on May 12, 2026, when the temple priest, Mukesh Sharma, filed an e-FIR. He reported that upon arriving at the temple, he found the ancient idol and other brass items missing. Given the seriousness of the case, especially with the Maha Shani Jayanti approaching, a special team from the Kotwali police station was formed. The team scrutinized CCTV footage from surrounding areas and potential escape routes, eventually capturing a clear image of the suspect.

Local sources helped identify the main suspect as Dilshad alias Banta, 45, who resides in the Yamuna Bazaar area. He was arrested on the night of May 14. During interrogation, he revealed that he sold the stolen idol and other items to a scrap dealer named Geeta Kumari for 3,800 rupees. Following this lead, police raided her location on May 15 and arrested her as well, recovering the idol and all other stolen goods, including a canopy, mace, plate, and two lamp stands.

Dilshad has a criminal history, with involvement in 15 cases of theft, snatching, and violations of the Arms Act across various police stations in Delhi. Geeta Kumari has also been found to be involved in a previous theft case.
